The lasting legacy of Fred Rogers

Fred Rogers changed the lives of countless people with his television show, Mister Rogers' Neighborhood. Unimpressed with the quality of children's television, he wanted to create something better. And he really did. To this day, Mister Rogers' Neighborhood remains the best children's show ever created. The program focused on the child's developing psyche, feelings, sense of moral and ethical reasoning, civility, tolerance, sharing, and self-worth. He did not shy away from difficult topics, such as the death, sibling rivalry, having a new sibling, moving and going to a new school, and divorce.

Born March 20th, 1928, Fred McFeely Rogers was a television personality, a musician, a puppeteer, writer, producer, and a Presbyterian minister. He was best known for his show, Mister Rogers' Neighborhood, which ran from 1968-2001. He had a difficult childhood and experienced bullying due to his weight.

The slow-paced, calm nature of his show is in sharp contrast to today's flashy, action-packed shows. Most children's entertainment focuses on holding the child's attention through fast scene changes, zany antics, and instant gratification, while Mister Rogers' Neighborhood focused on substance, and creating a real relationship between Mister Rogers and the viewer. Rogers emphasized young children's social and emotional needs, and did not focus on cognitive learning. He wrote and edited each of the 895 episodes produced, played the piano, performed most of the songs, wrote 200 songs and 13 operas, created all of the characters (both puppet and human), played most of the major puppet roles, performed as host for each episode, and produced and approved every detail of the program.

One of the things that stands out most about Fred Rogers is the way he always spoke to children with respect (and spoke to adults in the same way). He never spoke down to children, he was never patronizing. He never came across as a "teacher", but rather he was a friendly neighbor who just enjoyed spending time with the viewer. He taught people to love wholeheartedly and without pretense.

"Whenever a great tragedy strikes -- war, famine, mass shootings, or even an outbreak of populist rage -- millions of people turn to Fred's messages about life. Then the web is filled with his words and images. With fascinating frequency, his written messages and video clips surge across the Internet, reaching hundreds of thousands of people who, confronted with a tough issue or ominous development, open themselves to Rogers's messages of quiet contemplation, of simplicity, of active listening and the practice of human kindness." - Maxwell King, biographer

                // !! IMPORTANT README:

// You may add additional external JS and CSS as needed to complete the project, however the current external resource MUST remain in place for the tests to work. BABEL must also be left in place.

/***********
INSTRUCTIONS:
  - Select the project you would
    like to complete from the dropdown
    menu.
  - Click the "RUN TESTS" button to
    run the tests against the blank
    pen.
  - Click the "TESTS" button to see
    the individual test cases.
    (should all be failing at first)
  - Start coding! As you fulfill each
    test case, you will see them go
    from red to green.
  - As you start to build out your
    project, when tests are failing,
    you should get helpful errors
    along the way!

// PLEASE NOTE: Adding global style rules using the * selector, or by adding rules to body {..} or html {..}, or to all elements within body or html, i.e. h1 {..}, has the potential to pollute the test suite's CSS. Try adding: * { color: red }, for a quick example!
