Add External Stylesheets/Pens

Any URL's added here will be added as
s in order, and before the CSS in the editor. If you link to another Pen, it will include the CSS from that Pen. If the preprocessor matches, it will attempt to combine them before processing.

+ add another resource

You're using npm packages, so we've auto-selected Babel for you here, which we require to process imports and make it all work. If you need to use a different JavaScript preprocessor, remove the packages in the npm tab.

Add External Scripts/Pens

Any URL's added here will be added as s in order, and run before the JavaScript in the editor. You can use the URL of any other Pen and it will include the JavaScript from that Pen.

Use npm Packages

We can make npm packages available for you to use in your JavaScript. We use webpack to prepare them and make them available to import. We'll also process your JavaScript with Babel.

Stephen Sondheim was a masterful lyricist in his early career; however, he was not contented to produce only words for classic musicals such as West Side Story and Gypsy. He wanted to write the music, too. Under the tutelage of and mentorship of Oscar Hammerstein, young Stephen Sondheim learned how to structure a musical.

Called a classical music composer who writes for theater, his music challenges as much as his subject matter. Sweeney Todd is a vengeful, murderous barber in Victorian London whose victims are baked into pies by his accomplice pie-maker, Mrs. Lovett. Pacific Overtures covers Japan's opening up to the West in the 19th century. A Little Night Music follows the sexual escapades and mores of an aging actress, her ex-lover lawyer, and his virginal young wife. Finally, his Pulitzer Prize-winning masterwork Sunday in the Park with George recounts the creation of George Seurat's own masterwork painting, Sunday on the Island of La Grande Jatte.

Stephen Sondheim's works are at various turns witty, insightful, profound, and dark. All are ultimately moving. He is a modern-day Shakespeare, and a profoundly gifted composer and lyricist whose works will be cherished and remembered for a long time.
