         <p class="common-text">In 1978, at the age of 22, the Berklee School of Music graduate was playing with mediocre lounge bands in L.A. when he landed an audition with <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frank_Zappa" target="_blank">Frank Zappa</a>.  The audition piece?  The infamous "<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Black_Page" target="_blank">Black Page</a>."  After reportedly acing the audition, he became Zappa's primary drummer for several years.  His performances on <a href="http://www.allmusic.com/album/joes-garage-act-1-2-3-mw0000196440" target="_blank"><i>Joe's Garage</i></a> and <a href="http://www.allmusic.com/album/shut-up-n-play-yer-guitar-mw0000651017" target="_blank"><i>Shut Up 'n Play Yer Guitar</i></a> are considered by many drummers to be among the most astounding ever recorded.</p>

        <p class="common-text">In the 1980's, while still playing with Frank Zappa, Vinnie went on to record albums with artists across numerous genres including Barbra Streisand, Olivia Newton-John, Billy Joel, The Temptations, John Patitucci, Tori Amos, The Beach Boys, Lee Ritenour, Barry Manilow, Robben Ford and Bette Midler.  Among his most renowned work during this period was Joni Mitchell's <a href="http://www.allmusic.com/album/wild-things-run-fast-mw0000074436" target="_blank"><i>Wild Things Run Fast</i></a>.</p>

        <p class="common-text">In 1989 Vinnie recorded with synth-axe/guitar player, Allan Holdsworth on his album, <a href="http://www.allmusic.com/album/secrets-mw0000200720" target=_"blank"><i>Secrets</i></a>.  While it received little mainstream press, the drumming community praised its ingenuity.  Acclaimed English drummer Gavin Harrison (King Crimson) exclaimed, "Pretty much every drummer I know would have it on their list of desert island discs... The way he was playing in 1989 was miles ahead of anyone else; it was like 30 years into the future.  I still haven’t heard anybody play like this."</p>

         <p class="common-text">As one of the most in-demand session musicians in L.A. Vinnie continued to record with the likes of Joni Mitchell, Frank Zappa, Ray Charles, and John McLaughlin.  He also auditioned to become Sting's touring and recording drummer, which he became.  Their collaboration began in 1990 and continued through the recording of triple-Platinum-certified and Grammy-award-winning <a href="http://www.allmusic.com/album/ten-summoners-tales-mw0000094858" target="_blank"><i>Ten Summoner's Tales</i></a> as well as 1994's <a href="http://www.allmusic.com/album/mercury-falling-mw0000180829" target="_blank"><i>Mercury Falling</i></a>.  These albums not only propelled Sting to super-stardom as a solo act; they also make Vinnie Colaiuta a household name in the drumming community.</p>

        <p class="common-text">Although the foundation of Vinnie's drumming was jazz, he had yet to show off his jazz "chops" to the masses.  In 1997 an opportunity to play with jazz and piano virtuoso, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chick_Corea" target="_blank"> Chick Corea</a> (who has been awarded 24 Grammy awards as of the writing of this tribute page).  Their partnership reached its pinnacle at the acclaimed jazz club, <a href="https://www.bluenote.co.jp/jp/" target="_blank">Blue Note Tokyo</a>.  Legendary bassist John Patitucci rounded out the trio, whose performance was released as, <a href="http://www.allmusic.com/album/live-from-blue-note-tokyo-mw0000529510" target="_blank"><i>Chick Corea Akoustic Band: Live at the Blue Note Tokyo</i></a>.<p>

        <p class="common-text">Being based in L.A., Vinnie also began recording and performing with a composer and keyboard player, David Garfield.  Garfield had former a superband of sorts with other renowned session players based in L.A.  They called themselves "Karizma" and Vinnie's work with them is highlighted by his mind-blowing performance on <a href="http://www.allmusic.com/album/document-mw0000004625" target="_blank"><i>Document: Live</i></a>, recorded live in Germany.  These six tracks are considered by many to be among the greatest drum performances ever recorded.</p>

         <p class="common-text">In addition to playing in Karizma, the new millennium saw Vinnie making several appearances at a small club in North Hollywood called, "<a href="http://www.thebakedpotato.com/" target="_blank">The Baked Potato</a>."  Known for a menu entirely composed of variations of the baked potato, this small club has witnessed magical performances by some of L.A.'s greatest musicians.  In the summer of 2000 Vinnie took the stage with Greg Mathieson, Abraham Laboriel, Sr and Michael Landau.  Their three blistering sets were compiled onto a two-CD album, <a href="https://www.discogs.com/Greg-Mathieson-Abraham-Laboriel-Michael-Landau-Vinnie-Colaiuta-Live-At-The-Baked-Potato-2000/release/5434305" target="_blank"><i>Live at the Baked Potato</i></a>.  Along with <i>Document: Live</i>, this recording is considered among Vinnie's best live performances.</p>

        <p class="common-text">As Vinnie continued to record with artists such as Robben Ford, Larry Carlton, Steely Dan, Chaka Khan, Michael Bublé, Stevie Nicks, Mike Stern, Megadeath, Queen Latifah, James Taylor, LeeAnn Rimes, the Backstreet Boys and Destiny's Child he was once again given the chance to show off his unparalleled jazz abilities.  He hit the road with with legendary jazz guitarist John McLaughlin and Chick Corea.  They were joined by jazz bass virtuoso Christian McBride.  The highlights of their world tour are on full display on their release, <a href="http://www.allmusic.com/album/five-peace-band-live-mw0000814498" target="_blank"><i>Five Peace Band: Live</i></a>.</p>

        <p class="common-text">Vinnie remains among the most in-demand drummers in the world.  Since playing with the "Five Peace Band" he has toured and/or recorded with Faith Hill, Herbie Hancock, Norah Jones, Paul McCartney, Joe Satriani and currently is on the road with Sting and Peter Gabriel.  Among his most notable performances in recent years was recorded at the London-area jazz club, "Ronnie Scott's."  Playing alongside teenage Aussie sensation Tal Wilkenfeld in support of Jeff Beck, <a href="http://www.allmusic.com/album/performing-this-week-live-at-ronnie-scotts-mw0000803384" target="_blank"><i>Performing This Week... Live at Ronnie Scott's</i></a> displays yet another view of Vinnie's consistently incredible play.</p>
