A Brief History of the Ocoee

Located in Southeast Tennessee near the small town of Ducktown, the Ocoee brings hundreds of thousands of visitors from all over the eastern United States every Spring and Summer.
This was not always the case. It was once an unaltered mountain stream that meandered through the Blue Ridge Mountains of northwest Georgia and southeast Tennessee. In 1913 the
East Tennessee Power Company built a series of dams to supply hydroelectric power to a large aluminum manufacturing project to the north. Those dams and the famous flume system
still exist today under the ownership of the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA).

In the 1970's, a significant landslide broke the flume system carrying the water to the #2 powerhouse. Water filled the riverbed and the famous, unique rapids appeared over the five mile stretch of what is now considered the Middle Ocoee. Whitewater recreation outposts began to spring up and take paying customers down the river's class III and IV rapids. Private boaters and kayakers also enjoyed the river as it ran free while repairs were made to the flume system.

Once the TVA had the flume line fixed the riverbed ran dry once again. The rafting outfitters that were present at the time worked out a 30-year contract with TVA for recreational releases from dams #2 and #3. That contract is still in effect today and hundreds of thousands flock to the area each Spring and Summer to enjoy the scenic beauty and exhiliration from these gorgeous rapids.
