                <div class="hidden-btn">
  Hi there, <label for="b">this is another experiment <button class="vh" hidden onClick='alert("you got me!")' id="b"></button></label> to try and make an inline button.

                .hidden-btn {
  max-width: 220px;
  margin: auto;

label {
  color: blue;
  position: relative;
  text-decoration: underline;

label:focus-within {
  color: navy;
  font-weight: bolder;

.vh {
  position: absolute;
  opacity: .001;
  z-index: 2;
  height: 1px;
  width: 1px;
  -moz-appearance: none;
  -webkit-appearance: none;

  &[hidden] {
    display: block;

.contents {
  display: contents;

  using an outline on an inline element like these examples makes for very awkward focus styles.
  these elements have been styled to look like links instead, which is a whole over level of confusing what this pattern really is.

there are additional issues here:
1. focus-within (which is necessary as the focused button would be invisible otherwise) is not supported in all browsers
2. the button cannot appear before the label to use the sibiling selector hack, (button:focus ~ label) for focusing, as that would then result in mobile screen readers focus the button, and then on the next swipe focus the button.
3. VoiceOver on desktop reads the button text twice. Once as part of the initial focus on the paragraph (before the button element), then again when moving VO focus through the DOM, before getting to the second part of the paragraph.
