Victor Frankl

Victor Frankl was a Holocaust survivor. This was no mean feat in itself it has to be said. As friends and family were dying around him he used this experience to develop and fine tune self-analytical skills. He tried to make sense of what was happening within his own mind under the most difficult conditions imaginable. After the war, Victor used these analytical skills as part of a process "Logotherapy" to counsel those who were regarded as suicide risks. He had great success in guiding people to regain control of their own lives and emotions by getting them to apply changes to their own internal thought processes.

Theory and practice - a personal life changing opportunity

Professor Frankl suggested that no-one other than yourself can control your emotions. This really made a huge impact on me. Whenever I am particularly troubled by anything and perhaps verging on despair I consider this and just think "I am happy!". That is at least a start in changing your attitude. It is strange to put any "out of the box" challenge like that to a thought process but it helps.

I remind myself that the temporary adversity I am facing is miniscule compared to the difficulties many people face on a day to day basis. It is amazing when you realise that no-one can make you unhappy but yourself. You can simply decide to be happy and no external circumstances can affect your decision. Obviously you can change your decision but it is your decision that impacts on your emotions. It is therefore critical to appreciate this - so it is not helpful to blame others for how you feel.

I selected Viktor Frankl to be the subject of this simple tribute page as part of a code-academy project. There are two main reasons for this choice:

First the Holocaust Memorial Day is on 27 January each year ....and this is close enough today as I write. It is also a time when the executive orders being issued in the USA are prompting people to compare the two scenarios.

Second I am surprised and disappointed that his work does not have as wide an audience as it should. Nowadays there are great pressures on people to fit particular norms or suffer the consequences of standing out and be bullied. Many people cope well with issues they face or do not care. Many others clearly view suicide as the only way out. Perhaps Victor's ideas should be shared more widely as a matter of course rather than as a result of a lucky internet search. This could have a significant impact on reducing suicide rates.
