    <p>Grace Hopper was a pioneering computer scientist. She was one of the first programmers of the Mark-1 computer at Harvard's Cruft Laboratory. She is best known for inventing the first compiler for programming languages, which she published in 1952. Her ground-breaking accomplishments and devotion to encouraging future computer scientists have made her an icon in her field. </p>

    <li>1949 - Became Senior Mathematician at the Ecker-Mauchly Computer Corporation where she developed her compiler and two compiler-based programming languages, MATH-MATIC and FLOW-MATIC.</li>
    <li>1952 - Published her A-0 compiler</li>
    <li>1954 - Named Ecker-Mauchly's director of Automatic Programming</li>
    <li>1959 - Served as a technical consultant to the committee that defined the new language, COBOL, which was built upon her early compiler-based language FLOW-MATIC.</li>
    <li>1967 - Began serving as the Director of New Programming Languages Group in the Navy.</li>
    <li>1966 - Retired from Naval Reserve at age 60</li>
    <li>1967 - Recalled to Active Duty</li>
    <li>1971 - Retired from Active Duty</li>
    <li>1972 - Recalled to Active Duty</li>
    <li>1983 - Promoted to Commodore</li>
    <li>1986 - Retired, awarded Defense Distinguished Service Medal</li>
    <li>1986 - Hired as Senior Consultant at Digital Equipment Corporation</li>
    <li>1992 - Died in Arlington, Va and buried at Arlington National Cemetery</li>
