At Gettysburg, the 20th Maine was assigned the vital task of protecting the left flank of the entire Union army. They were stationed on a hill called "Little Round Top", one of two hills that the Confederate forces had great interest in capturing. Throughout
the day on July 2, Chamberlain and his Maine troops withstood many assualts on the position, until their ammunition was nearly gone. When it became clear that the 15th Alabama regiment was mounting yet another attack, Chamberlain ordered a combined
flanking maneuver and bayonet charge, an action which led to the surrender of the remaining rebel troops and resulted with the securing of the Union flank as well as securing Chamberlain a place in the history books.

Chamberlain went on to have a successful post-military career, returning to his previous post as a professor of rhetoric (amongst other subjects) at Bowdoin College. He went on to become the 6th president of the university, and later became the 32nd governor
of Maine. To the right, is a list of Chamberlain's accomplishments.
