Movie Night 🎬

March is Movie Night month! Every Monday we'll email you with that week's prompt. We'll be having fun with movies. Some great, some, uhhh, maybe not so great but iconic just the same.

You'll need a CodePen account to join! Log In or Sign Up.

To participate: Create a Pen → and tag it codepenchallenge. We'll be watching and sharing the best stuff on our blog, Twitter, and Instagram (Use the #CodePenChallenge tag on Twitter and Instagram as well).

Stargate

There can be only one Ra.

In this sci-fi cult classic that spawned decades of spinoffs, a team gets together to solve the mystery of hieroglyphs. In the process, they open up a wormhole leading to an unknown, but strangely familiar planet.

Ideas

  1. Design your own Stargate or learn how to set icons in a ring.
  2. Animate the event horizon or wormhole space travel scene.
  3. Build a decoder ring to break a secret code.
  4. Create a 3D morphing image in the style of the helmets on Ra and his guards.

Dead Poets Society

"There's a time for daring and there's a time for caution, and a wise man understands which is called for."

An English teacher brings an unconventional style to a staid prep school in this Robin Williams' classic that is both inspiring and bittersweet.

Time to seize the day, and make your Pens extraordinary! (Standing on your desk is optional). Might be worth looking into PoetryDB, checking out this Collection, and taking the opportunity to get fancy with typography.

Ideas

  1. Typeset your favorite poem set in a beautiful, readable typeface. "O Captain! My Captain!", perhaps?
  2. A stylish RSVP page for a poetry reading
  3. A "Get a random poem" button that brings in a classic poem from an API or JSON file.

Good Burger

"Welcome to Good Burger! Home of the Good Burger! Can I take your order?"

Only real 90s kids will remember Good Burger — a story about friendship, competition, intrigue, and... shark poison?

Your challenge this week: build something that incorporates the fun and flavor of a Good Burger!

Ideas

  1. A burger order form
  2. A menu of hamburgers....with a hamburger menu 🍔☰🍔
  3. A carousel of hamburgers - maybe not quite as scary as the one in Ed's dream.

You've Got Mail

"I go online, and my breath catches in my chest until I hear three little words: You've got mail."

Believe it or not, there once was a time when people were excited to get an email! Back in 1998, "You've Got Mail" told the story of a couple who fell in love through the cutting-edge world of AOL chatrooms and email.

Here in 2018, your challenge for the week is building a Pen or Project inspired by this story of wire-crossed lovers!

Ideas

  1. A fun chat UI: Go retro with the classic AOL style of the film, or design something for the 21st century version of Shopgirl & NY152
  2. The next great email template: maybe you can help people fall in love with email again!
  3. Design an email icon, perhaps with an animation that signals when a new email arrives!
