Add External Stylesheets/Pens

Any URL's added here will be added as
s in order, and before the CSS in the editor. If you link to another Pen, it will include the CSS from that Pen. If the preprocessor matches, it will attempt to combine them before processing.

+ add another resource

You're using npm packages, so we've auto-selected Babel for you here, which we require to process imports and make it all work. If you need to use a different JavaScript preprocessor, remove the packages in the npm tab.

Add External Scripts/Pens

Any URL's added here will be added as s in order, and run before the JavaScript in the editor. You can use the URL of any other Pen and it will include the JavaScript from that Pen.

Use npm Packages

We can make npm packages available for you to use in your JavaScript. We use webpack to prepare them and make them available to import. We'll also process your JavaScript with Babel.

Early Life

Martha Ann Ricks was born into slavery in Tennessee in about 1817. Her father, who had trained as a minister, was able to buy his whole family out of slavery in 1830 and moved them all to the newly formed republic of Liberia.

A talented needlewoman

She clearly had an extraordinary life, travelling to England and the USA with her first husband and Liberia's president, Joseph Jenkins Roberts in 1848. She was also a skilled and industrious needlewoman, once winning an award for her stockings.

Martha and Victoria

Proud of Liberia and how her family had thrived there, Ricks understood Queen Victoria to have been a strong advocate of the abolition of slavery and that the Royal Navy continued to protect the Liberian coast from slavers. She spent 25 years working
on a quilt with a coffee tree design that she wished to present to the Queen.

In 1892, having saved the fare to travel to England, Ricks embarked on her trip to London with Mrs Roberts, the Liberian President's wife, eventually having an audience with the Queen on Saturday 16th July 1892.
