My Personal Experience

When I was in fifth grade I got my first flute. It was love at first toot. My mother encouraged my playing and bought me several albums of flute solos. I loved listening to them, but when I got my first album with James Gallway playing, I was inspired beyond anything else I had ever heard. His tone was huge and he had a flamboyance about his interpretation that sent tingles all over my body. From that point to this day I want to play like he does.

Humble Beginnings

Sir James Gallway, ODE started life very humbly, growing up in a working class family and beginning his playing career on a penny whistle. He began learning the flute when he was nine years old and at the tender age of eleven he won all three levels of competition at the Belfast Flute Championship. This got the notice of some well known musician and in his early teens he was accepted into the Royal College of Music under John Francis. He subsequently studied at the Paris Conservatoire under Jean-Pierre Rampal, and Marcel Moyse, both world class performers.

Becoming A Solo Performer

Gallway started his career as an orchestral musician. But after a less than wonderful experience with the Berlin Philharmonic he transitioned into a solo career. He was an instant sensation, with his huge, beautiful tone. He was a very diverse player and appealed to not only the classical genre, but played many wonderful arrangements of pop, and Irish traditional tunes. His most famous pop tune is “Annie’s Song.” He has recorded over 60 CDs in the classical, pop, and Irish traditional genres.

Still A Driving Force In The Music World

At the age of 75 he’s still very active, playing concerts, attending festivals, and teaching masterclasses the world over. His current passion is passing his knowledge on to the next generation of flutists. He still plays to packed houses and will be deeply missed throughout all the music world when he finally retires.
