Maxfield Parrish Tribute Page

Maxfield Parrish was perhaps the most revered illustrator of the early 20th Century.
His works appeared in children's books, on magazine covers and in advertisements.
People displayed his art prints and calendars in their homes. Later on, he focused on painting large murals
such as Old King Cole, which graced the St. Regis Hotel in New York City.

Born Frederick Parrish in 1870 in Philadelphia, he later took his grandmother's maiden name, Maxfield, for his professional name.
Although he was raised a Quaker, his parents encouraged his drawing and exposed him to art and architecture in Europe when he was a teenager.

He studied architecture at Haverford College and art at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art.
After a year spent painting in his father's studio in Massachusetts, Parrish returned to Pennsylvania
to study at the Drexel Institute of Art, Science and Industry.

Daybreak is considered to be Maxfield Parrish's most famous painting.

His career began with illustrations of covers for Life, Hearst's, Collier's and other major magazines
of the day. The children's books he illustrated include The Arabian Nights and L. Frank Baum's Mother Goose in Prose.
His advertisements for companies such as Edison-Mazda Lamps, Jell-o and Oneida Cutlery depicted scenes of fantasy inspired by
		   ancient Greece and fairy tales.

Maxfield Parrish invented the CMYK system, creating a multitude of colors from just cyan, magenta, yellow and black.
           His signature style came from building his scenes on geometric shapes; alternating oil glaze with varnish to produce a luminescent quality;
and the use of highly saturated colors such as the lapis lazuli shade that came to be known as Parrish blue.

Parrish ultimately moved to Plainfield, New Hampshire, where the Cornish Art Community was located.
He produced his works from his home and studio there until he passed away at the age of 95 in 1966.
He influenced modern artistic movements and inspired artists such as Norman Rockwell and Vasarely.
