The Peek Menu

In designing new navigation for our writing app at Vox Media we tested a design with a dropdown menu indicating the current state. The menu performed poorly as it didn’t do a good job of showing there were other options underneath it. As a result we went back to the drawing board and did a total overhaul of our navigation system including removing the hamburger menu which are really filled with mystery meat, you never know what’s inside of them until you click on them. Our effort to make a more intuitive and transparent navigation lead us to do many things, including the creation of a new navigation pattern I’ll call the “peek menu”. This menu is the small screen variant of a tabbed menu that packs a lot of information into a small space. There are lines like a hamburger menu but each line represents an item in the list as well as a highlighted line for the currently active item. Other menu items in the list are left partially exposed to help indicate the context around the current selection and that there are more buried options.
